Kathmandu-Pokhara Bus

City Guides

There are three types of buses that run from Kathmandu to Pokhara and Pokhara to Kathmandu, just 200kms but it can be a big difference:

1) Local buses that run from the government bus stand. These are your standard old, decrepit dangerous over crowded third world buses. Very slow and crowded, actually worse than Indian buses. These buses will stop anywhere for anyone. Some might be a little more express than others. Journey will take 8 hrs+bus_nepal_mysecreplanet

2) Micro or Mini Buses, run from private stands, these run from early in the morning (5:30am to about 3:00pm) Should take 4-5 hours, fast but have good brakes and most are new.  These buses leave every 20 minutes or when full. A good option if you want to take in some sights in the morning then leave around noon and arrive in Pokhara by evening.

To get to the mini-bus stand in Kathmandu you have to go to Kalanki Bus Park about 250rs taxi from Thamel (check the map of Kathmandu .) Most taxi driver will know the mini-bus stand, just say you want the mini-bus for Pokhara.  You can't buy these tickets from tourist travel agents! . It cost 350rs and they fill the bus up with 10 people! but once it's filled they go all the way to Pokhara or Kathmandu with only a few stops.  Don't sit in the front, it's scary, but not as scary as the little bag boy who's sometimes is forced to ride on the roof! A Toyota minibus used in Nepal.Nepali_Mini_Bus

3) Tourist Buses, This is probably the simplest option for anyone staying in Thamel. 350Rs is the standard there are so decent looking buses. You can just go down to bus park near Thamel and select your own bus.

The Greenline and some are nice quality but cost much more, be careful you do get the right buses if you pay 20 usd for a ticket. Greenline has a different departure place.  The Tourist Buses take from 7-10 hours because of length stops to various cheap road side restaurants. All these tourist (toutist) buses leave before 7:00 am, so if you miss it you will be stuck another day in Kathmandu!

Safety? I think the buses not used by the wealthy Nepalese are the most unsafe. The mini buses usually are new and have good breaks.

Taxi to Pokhara. About 5000Rs+ and not much faster than the mini bus. But a good option if you don't want to stay in Kathmandu.

Domestic Flights to Pokhara: around $60-100.  Maybe delayed by wealther conditions.

One trust Bus company is www.greenline.com.np $18 includes lunch and takes 7-8 hours, then again a fight is only $55 at off peak times.

there is NO bus, private or otherwise, In Nepal that does not stop to pick people up along the way, all the time! Perhaps it's a scam for the driver, who knows. And don't expect A/C just because you've paid for it, it just won't be there.

Micros to Pokhara from Kathmandu go from the crossroads at Kalangki junction.
You can get a bus or urban micro from Ratna Park, in the centre of the city, to Kalangki. There are even buses and micros to Kalangki from Boudha.

There is no bus station or park at Kalangki, the buses are parked on the roadside.
There is old closed sided rusty foot bridge at Kalangki and the micros are parked on the road going downhill from this bridge.
There are micros for other destinations too, not just Pokhara. And there are private buses running from there aswell.
In August 2013 the going rate for Kathmandu to Pokhara in a 12-seat micro was 500 Nepali rupees.
The journey is 5 hours, and really is.
You can buy your ticket on the spot.
There are many vehicles to choose from.
They leave only when they are full.

You don't want to ride the roads at night in Nepal. But you could take the mini bus in the late afternoon.

Greenline services are not good at all.. Because of your biased seat allocation system..im travelling in the cabin of the bus and not on the seat. This done even when i booked the tickets a day before and was the 4th or 5th person to do the booking for this bus. I also reached before 7 am to go by 7:30 bus. On top of it..even after informing that i have got lower back problem and requested for a seat in front ot atleast middle.. The staff was totally ignorant and rude.I boarded bus from kathmandu. Office Staff is completely inhuman. Such a big and famous bus service and im shocked to know that there is no process of seat alloction. It is totally upto the likes and dislikes of the office staff..strange
