Don't worry about booking in advance, a ticket for the next day or two can, 95% of the time, be purchase in Delhi, Bangkok or Calcutta.
How to get to Nepal by air?
Calcutta to Kathmandu is the cheapest route Indian
airlines flies this way $100-150.
Delhi to Kathmandu, Usually flight can be had a day or two in advance from Delhi or
Calcutta so don't worry about booking in advance.
Remember you need a visa for India. Transit
Visa are also issued and you can stay in the airport without a visa.

How to get to Nepal by road?
If your not in a hurry over land can be a nice way to get to Nepal. One advantage is that you can skip Kathmandu and head straight to Pokhara. The area around the border is interesting. A side trip could be to Lumbini, that is very nice with many large temples some new. It is reminiscent of Ankor wat.
I'm flying from Taipei to Kathmandu and the cheapest option is to take a China Airlines flight to Delhi and then fly from Delhi to Kathmandu (Jet Airways probably).
You say you don't need a visa to stay in the airport, but how can you pick up your bags from the first flight? Don't you have to go through immigration to pick up your bags (since you can't check your bags in the whole way to KTM)???
Lots of nice info :) But, although I have found flights from Sharjah to Kathmandu with AirArabia (and real cheap too) I can't seem to find Sharjah as EasyJet's destination. And I checked multiple times.
