Currently the Maoist have been elected and no one knows what
the will happen in the future. So the situation is: unknown
Nepal is not only one of the most corrupt but also one of
the poorest countries in the world. Even as foreigner your life maybe worth very
little in Nepal. Medical facilities are limited, you will need to go to Thailand
or India for good hospitals. Do not depend on a fixed schedules, allow plenty of
time for delays in buses, road blockage, plane cancellations.
Crimes perpetuated against foreigners seem to be increasing.
Be particularly careful in Kathmandu and at night.
Be wary of the internet touts. Foreigners are offered jobs
in Kathmandu to write blogs reports, and spam for trekking agencies. Remember
you don't need a guide and never book in advance. Never send any prepaid payment
in advance.
You'll hear things like, "If you don't have guide you will
be attacked..."
"If you don't book with us, there will be no rooms
available.."
"Nepal is safer than London or New York"
Don't fall for any internet hype. Nepal is not as safe as
India, Thailand, it is nowhere near as safe as any western country. Travelers
need to be aware of the risks if they are planning to go to Nepal.
